Are You Overdue for a Dental Cleaning?

Most adults know they should see a dentist twice a year. Most also fall behind at some point. Life gets busy, insurance changes, or visits simply get pushed off.

If any of the following sound familiar, it may be time to schedule:

  • It has been more than a year since your last professional cleaning

  • Your gums bleed when you brush or floss

  • You notice persistent bad breath that brushing does not resolve

  • Your teeth feel rough or appear darker near the gumline

  • You are experiencing sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods

  • You have had a gap in care due to a move, schedule changes, or insurance transitions

  • You have a family history of gum disease, and your visits have lapsed

Early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) can often be reversed when caught during a routine visit. Once it progresses, it becomes a long-term condition that requires ongoing management. In many cases, the difference comes down to timing.

Every appointment ends with a direct conversation. You leave knowing what was found, what was addressed, and what to monitor before your next visit, without waiting for a follow-up call.

Our process

What Your Cleaning Appointment Includes

A dental cleaning at Union Dental is structured to cover five key clinical components, not just scaling and polishing:

Oral exam

A visual evaluation of your gums, tongue, cheeks, and palate to identify inflammation, lesions, or changes that may require monitoring.

X-rays (as needed)

Bitewing and periapical X-rays help detect decay between teeth, bone changes, and issues below the gumline that cannot be seen during a visual exam. Frequency is based on your risk profile.

Periodontal charting

The hygienist measures the space between your teeth and gums. Healthy readings are typically between 1 to 3 mm. Deeper pockets may indicate early gum disease and are tracked over time.

Professional cleaning (prophylaxis)

Ultrasonic and hand instruments remove tartar buildup from tooth surfaces and just below the gumline. Teeth are then polished to remove surface stains and improve smoothness.

Oral cancer screening

A brief screening of the mouth, jaw, and neck is performed at each visit. Early detection plays a significant role in outcomes.

Most appointments take 45 to 60 minutes. If additional treatment is needed, it is scheduled separately to ensure adequate time and attention.

Step 1: Health review

Your hygienist reviews your medical history, medications, and any changes since your last visit. New patients receive a comprehensive baseline assessment.

Step 2: Cleaning and charting

Tartar is removed, gum measurements are taken, and X-rays are completed if needed. The hygienist documents findings for the dentist.

Step 3: Dentist evaluation

The dentist reviews the findings, performs an additional exam, and confirms any areas that need attention. If something is identified, it is explained clearly before you leave.

Step 4: Care plan discussion

If treatment is recommended, options are reviewed without pressure. If everything looks healthy, your next visit is scheduled based on your needs.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Understanding the flow of your visit can help you feel more comfortable and prepared.

When a Regular Cleaning Isn’t Enough

A standard cleaning is appropriate for patients with healthy gums or mild gingivitis. It focuses on removing plaque and tartar from above and slightly below the gumline.

However, if signs of gum disease are present, such as deeper gum pockets, persistent bleeding, or bone loss on X-rays, a more involved approach may be needed.

Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) removes buildup from below the gumline and smooths root surfaces to help prevent bacteria from reattaching.

This treatment is commonly recommended for early to moderate periodontitis. It is typically completed over two visits and followed by a periodontal maintenance schedule every three to four months.

If you have been told your gums are receding, if bleeding is consistent, or if it has been several years since your last cleaning, it is worth asking whether a deeper level of care is appropriate.

Union Dental also offers a broader range of gum disease treatment options to address both early-stage and advanced periodontal needs.

INsurance

Insurance and the Union Dental Membership Plan

Most dental insurance plans cover two preventative visits per year with little or no out-of-pocket cost. Union Dental accepts most major plans, and our team can verify your benefits before your visit.

If you do not have insurance, the Union Dental membership plan provides an alternative with predictable annual pricing. It includes routine cleanings, exams, and X-rays, with no waiting periods or claims processing.

For urgent issues between visits, we also offer same-day emergency dental appointments.
